Somerset wrythened dwarf ale glass

Stock Number: 4709

This is what we believe to be a Georgian, English, wrythen-moulded dwarf ale glass dating from the late 18th century, c1790.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age.  This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot which is nicely striated.
The glass has a funnel-shaped bowl measuring 5.3 cm (2.1 inches) in diameter at the rim.  The bowl is  wrythened from the bowl rim to the base and sits on a cushion knop and a short, plain stem and a shallow, conical foot which measures 6.3 cm (2.5 inches) in diameter.  The glass is 12.5 cm (5 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.  The foot has an imperfection at the rim which was caused by the shearing off at time of manufacture.  Collector's sticker to the base of the foot.
It is made from lead metal.
Provenance: The Chris Heggardon collection
