Modified cruciform decanter

Stock Number: 4412

This is what we believe to be a scarce, English, Georgian, mould-blown, modified cruciform carafe, dating from the first half of the 18th century, c1740.
The carafe is in excellent condition for its age.  This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with nearly 300 years of use.
The neck of the carafe is plain save for an applied, quintuple collar.  The body of the carafe is deeply grooved to maximise the surface area exposed to the ice when cooling the contents.  The body ends in a heavily kicked-in base which measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) square.  The base has a rough pontil mark.  The carafe itself is 22 cm (8.8 inches) in height.   There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any evidence of restoration.  There is some light staining to the base of the neck as shown in the last image.
It is made from English lead metal.
