Dark amethyst cream jug - Be Canny with the Cream

Stock Number: 4863

This is what we believe to be a hand blown, dark amethyst glass cream jug dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.  The jug is in excellent condition for its age.  This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot.
The jug has a baluster-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the pouring rim.  The bowl is plain save for worn gilding under the pouring rim and what was once the legend "Be Canny with the Cream" and sits on a raised conical foot.  The foot of the jug is 4.6 cm (1.8 inches) in diameter and the jug is 11.4 cm (4.6 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.  There is a collector's sticker to the base of the foot.
A good, clean, period jug of beautiful colour and made from heavy lead glass, weighing in at 218 g. (7 3/4 oz.).
