Engraved, baluster wine glass

Stock Number: 4796

This is what we believe to be a Georgian, Continental, knopped, engraved wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age.  It shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot commensurate with over 200 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot which is nicely striated as is the bowl.
The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 6.5 cm (2.6 inches) in diameter at the rim.  The bowl is engraved with a formal border under the rim of swags and tails featuring hatched vesicas and has a heavy bottom with an entrapped air tear.  The bowl sits on an irregularly shaped annular knop and a plain stem with a long, well-worked air tear.  The stem leads to a conical, folded foot which measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter.  The glass is 15.3 cm (6.1 inches) in height.  There are no chips, cracks, or any evidence of restoration.  There are some inclusions and unburst small bubbles in the metal of the bowl.
Continental soda glass weighing in at 104 g. (~ 3 3/4 oz.).
