Georgian engraved "Newcastle" light baluster wine glass

Stock Number: 4802

This is what we believe to be a Georgian "Newcastle" light baluster wine glass dating from the mid 18th century, c1750.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age.  This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot commensurate with 250+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot which is nicely striated as is the bowl.
The glass has a bell-shaped bowl measuring 7.8 cm (3.1 inches) in diameter at the rim.  The bowl is engraved with a formal border in the form of a trailing vine complete with perched birds.  The bowl sits on a short section of plain stem which leads in turn to a teared ball knop, a drop knop, a swollen knop, a short piece of plan stem, an inverted baluster and a basal cushion knop.  The stem ends in a conical foot which also measures 7.8 cm (3.1 inches) in diameter.  The glass is 18.8 cm (7.5 inches) in height.   There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.
It is made from lead metal weighing in at 226 g. (~ 8 oz.).
