Exceptional pillar cut sweetmeat glass

Stock Number: 4914

This is what we believe to be a superbly cut Georgian, facet cut stem sweetmeat glass dating from the late 18th century, c1790.   It is possibly the finest example of cutting we have seen in a sweetmeat in recent times.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age.  This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with 200+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot.
The glass has a double ogee bowl measuring 10.3 cm (4.1 inches) in diameter at the tooth-cut everted rim.  The bowl is decorated with two cut bands of ovals above a panel-cut base.  This type of ovals are extremely difficult to cut and is oviously the work of a master craftsman.  The bowl sits on an eight sided pedestal stem which leads to a domed foot which measures 9 cm (3.6 inches) in diameter.  The foot has been cut at the edge so that it resembles a flower when viewed from beneath.  The feet of sweetmeats were usually made smaller than the bowls to facilitate easier lifting from a serving station.  The glass is 16.3 cm (6.5 inches) in height. There are some very minor fleabite chips to some of the facets but this is almost always the case with such a heavily cut specimen from the period.  There are no cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.
It is made from English lead metal weighing in at 411 g. (~ 14 1/2 oz.).
