Deceptive or toastmaster's baluster wine glass

Stock Number: 4843

This is what we believe to be a scarce Georgian, deceptive baluster toastmaster's wine glass dating from the early to mid 18th century, c1735.  Such glasses were supposedly used by toastmasters to reduce the amount of alcohol they drank when raising toasts.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age.  It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 250+ years of use.  It has a rough pontil mark on the foot.
The glass has a small ogee-shaped bowl measuring 4.8 cm (1.9 inches) in diameter at the rim.  The bowl is plain and thickens considerably as it descends to disguise the small amount of liquor it holds.  The bowl sits on an inverted baluster stem containing a long, well-worked air tear and which leads to a conical foot which measures 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter.  The glass is 14.1 cm  (5.6 inches) in height.   It weighs 220 g. (~ 8 oz.).   There are no chips, cracks, scratches or any obvious signs of restoration.   There is a small collector's sticker to the base of the foot.
English lead glass.
