Disguised Jacobite pedestal stem sweetmeat glass

Stock Number: 4191

This is what we believe to be a Georgian, disguised Jacobite, cut glass sweetmeat glass dating from the middle to late 18th century, c1770.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age.  This means, of course, that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with 200+ years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot.

The glass has a double ogee bowl measuring 10.3 cm (4.1 inches) in diameter at the rim.  The bowl has a scallop-cut rim and the bowl is decorated with a band of large cut stars above which is a row of large olive cuts.  The bowl sits on a double merise and an eight sided pedestal stem which leads to three basal collars and a domed foot which measures 9.1 cm (3.6 inches) in diameter.  The foot has been cut into the shape of a Jacobite rose to demonstrate loyalty to the King over the Water.  The feet of sweetmeats were usually made smaller than the bowls to facilitate easier lifting from a serving station.  The glass itself is 15.6 cm (6.2 inches) in height. There are some very minor fleabite chips to some of the facets but this is almost always the case with such a heavily cut specimen from the period.  There are no cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

It is made from English lead metal.

Provenance: the D. S. Neave collection.
