Leech or apothecary jar and lid

Stock Number: 4779

This is what we believe to be a hand blown, mid-Georgian, Continental pharmacy or leech jar and lid dating from the turn of the 18th/19th centuries, c1800.

The jar is in excellent condition for its age.  This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 250 years of use.

The jar is in good grey glass and has an everted rim to the baluster-shaped bowl.  The base has a rough pontil mark.  The jar measures 13.5 cm (5.4 inches) in diameter at its widest point, and is 23.5 cm (9.4 inches) in height.    Blown in two pieces the elegant folded upwards foot measures 12.8 cm (5.1 inches) in diameter.  There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration.

The lid matches the glass of the jar and is an excellent fit.  We believe it to be the original.

It weighs 900 g. (~ 2 lb.).
