English triple series colour twist firing glass

Stock Number: 3202

This is what we believe to be a rare Georgian, triple series colour twist firing glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1770.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age.  It shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot commensurate with over 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the foot which is nicely striated as is the bowl.

The glass has a trumpet bowl measuring 5.9 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim.  The bowl sits on a triple series opaque twist stem consisting of two broad white enamel tapes around a central white opaque lace twist with one red opaque twist strand and one red opaque twist cotton strand wound around both.  The stem leads to a heavy firing foot which measures 6.3 cm (2.5 inches) in diameter.  The glass is 11.6 cm (4.6 inches) in height.  There are no chips, cracks, or any evidence of restoration.

Provenance: The Chris Crabtree collection
